I’m a huge nerd, and I’m also an avid crafter! That’s why I’m so excited about this new book: Knits for Nerds: 30 Projects for Fans of Science Fiction, Comic Books, Fantasy by Joan of Dark a.k.a. Toni Carr.

There are some fantastic, geeky projects in this book, and they’re accompanied by photos and knitting instructions. Some of my favorites? Mobius scarf, Hobbit feet slippers, and the “Aim to Misbehave Brown Jacket.” I’m a crocheter, but this book might inspire me to pick up two sticks and learn to knit! Seriously! I can make my own Browncoat?! That is awesome.

Fans of the Star Wars films know how powerful the “Imperial March” theme is. It’s the ominously dark, majestic theme that accompanies Darth Vader’s evil presence in the movies. Well, you may have seen Star Wars and prequels and its sequels a hundred times, but you’ve never heard the theme like this! In honor of the upcoming scholarly holiday, I am highlighting a fun shirt from my shop. Yes, self-promotion time. Plus, I think this is a very cool shirt. I guess that might tell you something about how un-cool I am.

The “I LOVE PI” shirt expresses my nerdy tendencies and punny sense of humor (I know, it’s so funny, you forgot to laugh) in a geek chic fashion statement. If this kind of thing appeals to you, go check it out. Remember, pi day is 3.14. That’s March 14, get it? Right on!

This water-powered clock is so cool! Not only does it run on water (or any electrolyte liquid), but it can even do bud-vase duty.

Have you seen the new ultra-thin laptop from Apple? It looks amazing! Even when it’s all folded up, the MacBook Air (sounds kind of like a shoe by Nike) is just 0.76 inches wide. I was trying to visualize that, and I stacked up a couple of CD jewel cases on my desk and got out the ruler. Although my old-fashioned wooden ruler is not exactly a precision instrument, I would guess that the two cases put together are wider than the MacBook Air. Wow, that’s thin.

Is anyone else having a Monty Python flashback? “It’s wafer-thin.” But I digress.

I won’t list all the features here (read the specs), but I will tell you that this is no 3.0 pound weakling. The MacBook Air comes with a 13.3-inch widescreen LED display, full-size lighted keyboard, built-in iSight camera, and the latest suite of Apple’s user-friendly software.

We’ve been a mostly Mac family for a long time, and I’d love to add this beauty to our collection. I might have to make a trip down to the Apple Store to see it in person. If you’ve already had a chance to try it out, please share your thoughts!

I was talking with another mom (name withheld to protect the un-cool) yesterday, and she said she had asked her favorite babysitter where Hollister is. She’d been noticing a lot of the young people wearing shirts from Hollister, and figured it must be a popular place to visit.

The teenager (a very sweet 18 year old) told her that Hollister is not a vacation destination. It’s a clothing brand and store.

Oh. hee hee.

The other mom and I decided it must be one of those hip shops at the mall with the really loud music. Maybe they have great clothes, but I’m not going to wheel my stroller in there. I think that’s the idea.

Just out of curiosity, I checked out the Hollister site. The shop is divided into two sections: Dudes and Bettys. What, no section for 30-something Geek Moms? I am sooo not “with it!”

Wow! This Hercules laser looks amazing. Besides that, I’m sure it has some very useful, scientific, real-world applications.

Among the capabilities listed on the Laserglow site, it is visible in direct sun, can light a fireworks fuse, pop a balloon, cut through electrical tape, and even burn through plastic. Well, what the heck have I been doing popping my balloons and cutting tape the old fashioned way? According to the manufacturer, Hercules is “the world’s most powerful portable laser.” Now I really want one — at least to test drive!

Is anyone else having flashbacks to the movie Real Genius? Remember when Val Kilmer and the other genius geek used that giant laser to fill Professor Hathaway’s house with popcorn? But I digress…

I don’t know whether it can make popcorn, but the Hercules will set you back around $1000 to $3000, depending on which model you choose. Hey, be careful where you point that thing!

This is my latest geek design: “Lorem ipsum…” Lots of people won’t understand the humor of this one, but if you are someone who routinely builds or uses web site templates and such, you’ll recognize the familiar dummy text. I thought it would be funny to put it on shirts and stuff, so here it is. Maybe this would look great on your office wall. Or maybe it would make the perfect gift for a certain someone. Enjoy!
