Silk Interactive Art Generator

What is Silk?

Since I can’t draw anything besides stick figures, I’m always excited about tools that help me create interesting and beautiful things. Silk is a very colorful and simple click-and-create artwork generator. The resulting artwork is pleasantly geeky, with a colorful, computer-generated sort of beauty. I love it!

How to use Silk

Silk controls
Silk controls

To start using the tool, simple click and drag your cursor over the blank screen. Silk will create an interesting pattern for you, which looks something like a Spirograph pattern, but more intricate and complicated.

Click on the color palette to change your ink, or click and drag between two colors to create a custom blend.

Change the way your lines are drawn by choosing different levels of rotational symmetry, mirroring, and spiral effects.

Artwork created with Silk

I had a great time playing with Silk, and I saved a few of my colorful creations. Give it a try (weavesilk.com) and let me know what you think! I’d love to see what you make.

Silk is also available for iPhone and iPad.

Free Phone Case Giveaway for Mother’s Day

Tech21 iPhone 6 case
My Tech21 iPhone 6 case

Geek Mom’s Review

Looking for an affordable accessory for Mother’s Day? I have three new Tech21 gadget cases to give away! I’ve just slipped a new Tech21 FlexShock™ case onto my iPhone 6, and here are my first impressions:

  1. It’s hard, but flexible. Easy to slip onto the phone, because it bends a little bit.
  2. Shiny and colorful. Reminds me a bit of those plastic “jelly shoes” from the 80s. Or a phone-shaped gummy candy. Very pretty!
  3. Interesting looking texture. I can see through the case to the Apple on the back, but there is a nice polka-dot texture overlay.
  4. Excellent fit on the phone. Fits like a plastic glove.
  5. Screen protector not included. The case covers the back, sides, and buttons, but leaves the screen and ports open.

So far, I’m enjoying my free phone case. I’m tempted to taste it, because it looks like candy! It’s shiny, but not slippery. It’s hard, but not rigid.

Stress Free App Review

To help me relax and sleep better, I’ve tried a few relaxation apps on my iPhone. The one I’m reviewing today is called, “Stress Free,” by Andrew Johnson.

As a mother of three kids, my life is extremely busy these days. Now that school is back in session, I have one child in high school, one in middle school, and one in elementary school. Yes. Three kids in three different schools.

Meditation and Relaxation AppTo help me relax and sleep better, I’ve tried a few relaxation apps on my iPhone. The one I’m reviewing today is called, “Stress Free,” by Andrew Johnson.

The app is easy to use. After installation, just open it up and check on the settings. You can adjust the length of the program according to your needs. Choose whether to include the audio instructions, short or long relaxation program, how many times to repeat the program, and how to end (sleep or wake up).

Johnson has a pleasant voice, and the background sounds are soothing. I listen with headphones on when I go to bed.

The program itself consists of Andrew Johnson talking you through a relaxation progression, followed by some suggestions on how to deal with stress. Honestly, I don’t remember exactly what Johnson says during the second half of the program, because I usually fall asleep before it’s finished.

“Stress Free” is available in the Apple Store for $2.99. I’m not convinced it’s making me “stress free,” but it is helping me fall asleep peacefully, and that’s worth $2.99 to me!

How Steve Jobs Changed the World

Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs Changed the World

I know Steve Jobs was not a god. I don’t worship him. I just have such a great appreciation for his ideas, and the things that grew out of them.

And although it might sound exaggerated, he really did change the world. Even for millions of people who never met him, it’s kind of like he was our friend.

He created things that we use and love. He made devices that we hold against our faces, and keep in pockets over our hearts. Many of us regard our pet gadgets as trusty sidekicks. We sleep with them, eat with them, and emote over them.

He changed the world because he affected every Apple user individually, and gave us something in common where there might not have been anything there before.

Thank you for making the world a better place, Steve. 🙂

Steve Jobs, Rest In Peace

Steve Jobs was a visionary and a Geek Legend. Here is a commencement speech he gave at Stanford University in 2005. It’s a great speech. Rest In Peace, Steve.

I’m sad that Steve Jobs has died today. I’ve always appreciated the careful design and engineering of his company’s products. He was a visionary and a Geek Legend. Here is a commencement speech he gave at Stanford University in 2005. It’s a great speech. Rest In Peace, Steve.
