My current obsession: The Twilight Saga

by GeekMom on May 30, 2008

A slow start

Vampires, werewolves, and romance — and a heap of teen angst. A couple of my friends recommended Twilight to me last fall, and one even loaned me her copy of the book. I started reading it in October, but never got very far. It seemed slow, and too “young adult fiction” for me. It didn’t grab me like the Harry Potter stories had, so I set it aside.

Remember what it felt like to be seventeen?

Well, in April, I was convinced to try it again. I made it through the relatively slow first couple of chapters, getting to know the characters, and becoming accustomed to Stephenie Meyer’s writing style. Little by little, I became emotionally attached to the main character, Bella Swan, because Meyer does an excellent job of reminding me what it felt like to be seventeen. The self-consciousness, anxiety, emotion, and will-he-notice-me-today butterflies…

Impossibly in love

As Bella became entwined in the mysterious life of her crush, Edward Cullen (an irresistibly beautiful, and dangerous vampire), so did I. By the halfway point in Twilight, I was completely hooked on the story, and I couldn’t put the book down. Once the action started, it was genuinely exciting, and it didn’t stop until the end. It was like the first half had been a long, slow ascent on a roller coaster, and the second half was the screaming fast, twisty-loopy part. As soon as I was done, I wanted to go again! So I went right out and bought New Moon, the second book.

New Moon seemed to follow the same slow-start-fast-finish pattern that Twilight had. I finished that off in about a week, and I’m waiting for my favorite Man In Brown to deliver Eclipse today. I’m completely in love with Edward, the powerful, gentle, protective, beautiful vampire. And the way Meyer describes him, it seems to make perfect sense that Bella would want to be with him forever, no matter what…

The fourth and final book, Breaking Dawn, will be released in August, and I have already pre-ordered it.

Waiting impatiently for the movie

Edward and Bella from the movie TwilightTwilight, the movie, will be released in December 2008 November 21, 2008, and I am so excited! I can hardly wait to see the amazing story of vampires, werewolves, legend, and magic, come to life on the screen. This photo is of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart, who play Edward (vampire) and Bella (human). Aren’t they gorgeous?!

You have all summer to get caught up if you start reading now… Cheers!

Welcome aboard the Twilight train :) The only gripe I have is how Bella seems so melodramatic at times. Like a Jane Austen character, which doesn’t really fit in this century. I think she needs to chill a bit. Besides that, I’m in love with them, too. And I’m really sad that the movie comes out two days after I’m due! I swear if I’m still pregnant on Dec 12, I’m going to that movie!

@Natalie: Congratulations! Even if you have the baby before the movie comes out, maybe you can get out for a couple of hours while it’s in the theater. You’ll need a little break, right? And I know what you mean about Bella. Meyer did a great job of reminding me what it felt like to be mopey and emotional at times. For a while there, I felt like he had really dumped ME. Glad I’m not 17 anymore!

That was a great review. I am also a mom a wrote about this series on my blog about parents and teens but hadn’t read the books http://connectwithyourteens.blogspot.com/2008/05/twilight-hot-teen-book-series-by.html
I bought the first book, but haven’t had time to read it, spending way too much time online. I might do a followup and link to this post for a mom’s review.

I hope that Robert and Kristen sign up for playing Bella and Edward through all the movies that may be released. I restarted reading the books again but this time knowing exactly what the characters look like. For that matter, I hope all the characters remain the same actors. That is what makes great movies like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Back to the Future………

The day it comes out has changed, its the 21st November now, the bella in the picture above doesn’t look like human bella i think because this might be how she is going to look as a vampire

I’m happy to hear that I wasn’t the only person who’d been “molasses on a cold day slow” about finally getting around to reading these books. For monthes and monthes now I’d had several people telling me to read them. I kept thinking…I’m 30 years old, this is a book for teens. I love vampire books though and had said I’d get to them eventually. Finally my friend handed me Twilight one day and I gave it a try. I had myself so enthralled with the world that Stephenie Meyer wrote that I was finished with the first three books of the saga in less than a week! (I like to read but, this may have been a new record even for me and I’ve been informed by my fiance’ that I’ve an addiction for them! LOL) Now I’m almost finished with the fourth and though it is a bit different I can’t wait to turn the pages. So now in the middle of a move 4 states north of FL (Shudder) I’m busy packing and salivating to read more Breaking Dawn!!! LOL Oh and by the way…Nov. 21st can not arrive expedientiously enough!!! The cast is all just as pretty as they should be! :)
Just wanted to blab…boy did I! LOL Sorry can’t help gushing on this one!

I might just die for waiting so long for the fifth book. Did u no that the fifth book is in Edward’s perspective?!!!! it’s the coolest thing since the beginning of time!!!!

ok so i’m not a mom. but i did fall in live with edward cause he just wants bella to be happy, he is a selfless lover, and a protector. I have read the books over and over agian because ican not get over how he just wants her to be happy. I have also fallen for jacob but not for the same reasons. I have fallen for him cause he can protcet bella from herself and he could keep her warm in more human ways than possible and edward can’t. JAcob may be selfish but bella is too in a way that cna’t be described. She is inlove with jacob to but in a different way than edward. She has made up her mind in the 4th book but in some way she still wants jacob to be happy she siad it herself he was her personal sun but now he is her daughters personal sun. i stick to my comments and say i’m on edwards team but also on jacobs . so just call me switzerland.

I am a 46 yr old mom of 2, and I love Twilight! My 16 yr old daughter and I saw the movie 4 times in 9 days. We each have the book series, a calendar, an Edward poster and the movie companion book. LOVE IT!

Your review was amazing.
Im a 16 year old student and over the summer the christmas holidays i read all 4 books, I too fell inlove with Edward and Bella and realy couldnt find much fault in the series bar how some parts drag longer than needed. My friends have all read the series and at first we spent hours on end talking abut how awesome it was. I saw the movie in cinemas before i read the first book and i loved it, then after reading it realised how much better the movie could have been. Despite now changing my opinion of the movie I cannot wait for it to be released on DVD so I can watch it over and over and over again. I really do wish she makes another book to continue the series, there is much she can do to follow.. maybe something to do with the Volturi and how they react in the end to the powerful newborn Bella after the scene in the feild. I usedto listen to Decode by Paramore alot, it was like reliving the movie in my head, which sounds nutty but I really don’t care. I never enjoyed reading and have picked up and pu down the Harry Potter series many times, with Twilight I never once thought about putting the book down until I was forced to. Stephenie Meyers writing is … different but oh my god does she know how to make you fall in love or what.
(: well im off to sit and wait for the DVD release.
To all that haven’t read it.. DO IT!

I’ve ordered my Twilight DVD set, and I can hardly wait for it to arrive!

@Shannon, that is hilarious how quickly your sister read all four books! She must have stayed awake for two whole days. :-)

I guess I am a little slow on the uptake ’cause I didn’t hear about Twilight till much later. My nephew was actually the one who told me about the Twilight series, but even then it didn’t really grab my attention. I figured it was some silly teenager type books that I wouldn’t be interested in. It actually took me to watch the movie, which I happened on quite accidentally. (A friend loaned me it one night to take home and watch) I loved the movie. And I was hooked I think fr0m then on. The day after watching the movie, I ran out and got the first book, and I couldn’t put it down. Once I had finished it of course I had to run right back to the book store and get then next one, and so on. I guess I too became obsessed. I just finished the the last book in the series. I’m almost sad I’m done. (Though I think my husband and kids are releived)
What great reading. So when does the next movie come out?????
