So you’re a geek… It’s okay, honey.

by GeekMom on May 1, 2008

"Mom, one of the kids on the bus called me a geek, and I didn't like it!" This is what my third-grader told me a few days ago. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and there's never any question about what kind of mood he's in. "Great!" I said, trying to cheer him up. "Mom's a geek too. And Dad! Isn't that awesome?" He thought for a second. "Mom, what's a geek, anyway?" Next time on Geek Family Ties, a very special episode... I told him that a geek is someone who is really interested in computers and video games, is very smart, and skilled at using technology and stuff like that. Close enough? Apparently, my son had been talking about the attributes and comparative advantages of the civilizations available in the game Age of Mythology. He especially enjoys discussing the various "God Powers" you can use during the game, such as Shifting Sands, Fimbulwinter, Minions, etc. Sometimes, when my boys are sitting quietly, looking pensive, I'll ask what they're thinking about. Most of the time, they're thinking about video games. When they're eating breakfast together, they talk about game strategies and discoveries. (Yes, I've already admitted we're addicted.) I guess, to other nine year olds, talking about that kind of thing on the bus and at recess makes a kid a geek. He may not like it now, but my six year old thinks it's cool. The geek shall inherit the earth, right? :-)

Looks like we’ve turned another corner in the history of American family life. My parents didn’t play video games and now there are parents who play video games with their children, even some of the same ones we played as kids.

My 14 year old stepson got the SNES version of Sim City for the Wii and the original Super Mario Brothers. I rocked on Sim City in 7th grade on the Apple IIe (my Apple roots go back far).

playing video games with your kids will make you a “spert” among the geeks. He will like the label in about another year (from experience) and he will then really let you know his strategy with the games. Have fun cause they grow up so fast!

Everything about “geek” is in these days. Even the website geek.com may already cost a fortune. So it is perhaps more of a compliment being called geek. :-)

lo - rock on Heather! And if there’s even a hint of confusion left, you can always remind him that Best Buy’s got a “Geek Squad” set up coz they can do just about anything they set their minds to.

Well - that may not be why and I may not be a big fan of Best Buy but HEY - they market it like that and I figured he’d be familiar with the term. ;)

In any case, geeks definitely rule. Man - I wish I was one!

Hooray for geeks! I think being called a geek nowadays is practically a compliment. Good for you for embracing it - I plan on doing the same with my son.

Nothing wrong with geeks I guess I am one sort of. If you call someone who spends a lot of time in front of the computer blogging and writing a geek. My daughter is somewhat of a geek. She loves playing her playstation and spends a lot of time on the computer as well.

My three year old niece is growing up fine as a little geek and budding gamer, along with bookworm and nerd. Her Auntie couldn’t be more proud.

My Geekness did not rub off on my daughter. Sigh. Oh, she’s fine with working with technology and all, but she doesn’t revel in it like a Geek. She grew up to be a Social Butterfly. I have no idea where that came from.

And yes… we’re going to inherit the earth! :)

I personally find geeks cool because unlike ordinary boring people at least they’re passionate about something… =)

Hey, being a geek that’s into a technology is cool. But those studious ones who likes to beg for a pathetic mark…is a major turn off.

You know in a few more years, the only thing your boy’s friends are going to talk about are video game strategies! Your third grader is so cool because he’s ahead of his time!

In our house we use “Geek” as term of endearment. What can I say, my huband and I both work in IT.

Welcome, friends!

I can't teach you how to monetize your blog, but I can offer you some mostly intelligent conversation, moderately geeky tech talk, very funny mom stories, with the occasional rant thrown in for flavor. I'm so glad you're here!
