What I want from the final season of Battlestar Galactica
I can hardly wait! There’s just a week left until the fourth and final season of Battlestar Galactica kicks off. Even though the season/series finale will probably not air until 2009, I am looking forward to a whiz-bang ride of a conclusion! There are lots of questions to be answered before the end, and I have a feeling it will be like a roller coaster that keeps accelerating right up to the finish.
If you’re not a fan of BSG already, you can get all caught up on the previous seasons at the official site. There is a clever video that hits the most important plot points, with video clips and pithy commentary, and it’s less than 8 minutes long. You can also see the promotional photos for Season 4, like this one of Starbuck and Apollo (courtesy of scifi.com).
During the hiatus, I’ve been mulling over some questions in my mind. These are the things I really want to know, before they drive me crazy! Here is a short (okay, not really short) list of what I’ll be looking for during the last season:
- Starbuck died, but she came back, and she says she’s been to Earth. Did she die? Is she a Cylon? How will she be received? Savior, or harbinger of doom (that’s what the Cylon hybrid in the goo bath called her)? Once and for all, who is Kara Thrace, and what is her Special Destiny?!
- Four of the five “other” Cylons have been revealed. Each of them seems to have been placed into a strategically critical role, where they will certainly influence the outcome of the story. Will they all work together? Will they save or destroy humankind, once and for all? Are they good guys? Why don’t the other Cylons talk about the Five? They must be different.
- Who is the fifth Cylon? I must know!
- What will become of Gaius Baltar? Is he the final Cylon? Six has always said, “God has a plan for you, Gaius,” and I think he might finally believe her. Or is he just a pawn, a weak man, and a traitor?
- A couple of seasons ago, Six told Baltar that the hybrid baby was the shape of things to come. What was that all about? Now that there are two human-Cylon babies (Hera Agathon, and Nicky Tyrol), where do they fit into the story? They must be important.
- Laura Roslin’s cancer has returned. This puts her back into the prophesied role of “a dying leader,” to lead the people to Earth. Will the fact that she was once injected with Cylon-human hybrid blood come into play, or is it just an obscure fact?
- Will Apollo and Starbuck ever get together? As much as I wish they would, Katee Sackhoff has said that she doesn’t want Starbuck’s story to be wrapped up in a neat little bow at the end. I don’t think things will end happily for Starbuck.
Well, I’ll stop there, because I’m making myself crazy obsessing over these questions. There are other things I’m wondering about, but I just hope that I get some answers quickly once the season starts up!
Are you a BSG fan? Do you think there will be a happy ending for the human race?

I can’t wait to see how this all turns out (and I am hoping so hard that I love what they do, I don’t want this to be a disappointing ending, heh). Starbuck’s story doesn’t have to be wrapped in a bow, but I’d like to see a hint that life is going to be good for her.
And really, I want to see Laura and Adama (the older one) happy together by the end, that little flirtation is too cute!

Forgive me but I am a fan of the original series. I tried to watch the new one but it had too many flaws from the original mythology. The things you discuss here as wanting to see disturb me in ways I can not even begin to explain. Mainly because I grew up on the original. I am trying desperately in my geekdom to be civil and polite and I do have one simple question. How do you take a character that was such a huge part of what made the original work and make him a her? I truly am at a loss.

@Erin: Adama and Roslin are cute. I like the way their relationship has evolved over time. They’re both such tough characters, but they get to show a more tender, human side when it comes to their private relationship.
@Jim: I appreciate your feelings. I never watched the original series, so I don’t have the problem of comparing the new BSG to the original. I can imagine that I might have a hard time with some of the changes if I had been a die-hard fan of the original. My hubby and brother-in-law did watch the “old” BSG, and my hubby said some of the changes bothered him at first, but he thinks of it as a distinctly different series.
I saw a short clip of one of the writers or producers, and he said the new BSG is a different way of telling the story. So I guess it’s not meant to be a direct continuation of the original series, but more like an alternate rendition of the tale.
Can we still be friends?
I can’t wait for the new season to start! It’s been killing me.
I think I need to go back and rewatch all of them from the beginning. It’ll be….what….the 5th or 6th time *laughs*.

Sometimes I think you and I are the same person…
I have been waiting for fraking eternity for this. I was still pregnant when sci fi pulled that “until next year” crap. I love BSG, it’s flat out my #1 show!!!
Actually, tonight the hubby and I are snuggling up to watch the pre BSG shows.

I think there is another race. I believe that maybe they could be in some sort of time loop and the whole story could be what their Bible is talking about… But its all about them.
The whole starbuck thing blows my mind… I wish i knew the answers but its all got to much for me
The razor story was amazing! I think ill start watching things again this week so i fully remember things

I was such a huge fan of the old BSG that I have not been able to make myself watch the new version. Maybe I should see what I am missing!!
You’re so lucky - I’m in the UK and I don’t know when we’re getting series 4. BSG is one of the very few things I really love on TV an dthe wait is killing me!
I have a theory about the Starbuck being blown up but coming back alive thing. I think that she was taken into a Cylon ship and they showed her how to get to Earth - or maybe they were just trying to mislead her?

I watched the original BSG. When I was only 8 or 9, I was drawn to it eventhough it has cheesy sfx and mediocre acting. I did like Lorne Greene’s role as Commander Adama, because he was already an established actor (seen him before in Bonanza).
With the remake of BSG, I had my reservations when they changed almost everything. But, like any good series, they managed to get better after the late 2nd season into the 3rd season. I’m glad they’re ending it at the 4th because it would’ve gone downhill after that.
However, I have a feeling it won’t end there. They may make direct to DVD mini-movies. Just like what they’re doing with Stargate SG-1. So we won’t see the end of it.

FYI everybody, I’ve been catching lots of reruns on Sci-Fi during the day, and I love it! It’s really fun seeing the older parts of the story again, and it’s making me look forward to Friday night even more.
Also, the last two episodes of Season 3 are going to be shown immediately before the first of Season 4, so you should get your popcorn ready, and settle in for a long night of BSG!
@Jodith: I love re-watching, especially since I can skip the commercials once I have the episodes recorded.
@Mommie: We could be copies of the same Cylon model.
@Lee: Yes, it’s mind-blowing in a very fun way!
@Michael: So say we all!
@New Zealand: You should definitely check it out! You can see full episodes for free at hulu.com
@Nicola: Oooh, that’s a good one. I’m torn as to whether or not she died. Katee Sackhoff said that Starbuck was dead… Or Starbuck as we knew her. I don’t know what that means.
@Rudy: I would be happy to have continuing installments, as long as they were as good as the current episodes are.

They made us wait FAR too long for the last season. It’s hard to keep up the intensity of waiting for soooo long. I cannot wait. It will take a little while to get back into everything and the nuanced evil of the cylons.

@ GeekMom response left
I think the last Frakin’ toaster will be Gaeta. But Gaius is also a good candidate. Him in 6 are in love, but they didn’t conceive a child. 2 cylons = No Baby. human + cylon + love = Baby. Plus he is becoming a believer in one true God. Also you have the strange link between him and 6.
Starbuck isn’t a cylon. Think back to her session with the oracle. The oracle new all about her and her mother. She said her mother was preparing her for her destiny. Plus we know from her stint in the “Farm” that she suffered major injuries as a child…. the fingers.
@ Rudy If you check out both BSG Reveled and BSG The Phenomenon you’ll find that they have said it ends with the final episode. There will be a finite conclusion. Earth or total destruction!

Well..while I don’t share the same sentiments as Jim..I too had a difficult time in the beginning with the character changes. Col. Tigh, Boomer, Starbuck, and Baltar. These were all integral characters from the original 70’s series. I was a huge fan of the original series and was stoked when I saw Sci-fi channel was doing a new one. It took a little time to get used to it..but I am definitely hooked. Once I put the old series behind me and just decided to take the new one in for what it was…I find myself getting bummed when the season is over. They do have a few odd things going on..like the whole Starbuck dieing then coming back..but for the most part…I’m in major anticipation of it coming back on. Already got the DVR set!

When the third season ended and they put up the part about to be continued in 2008, I was just as frustrated as everyone else but now that it’s here I’m glad it’s been a year between seasons and hope there’s another long gap before the end of the series. It’s good for the show as it lets us fans tell more people about the show and gives them time to catch up, but also it stretches out this great show without pumping out too many episodes.
I just really hope they land on Earth and reveal what time period they’re in compared to our real timeline. Personally, I think it’d be real cool for them to land in our approximate timeline but know they’ll surprise me one way or the other.
@Jim - Just a Guy,
I’m glad the new BSG is different from the old BSG, it’s a re-visioning not a rehash and lets us youngsters go back and watch the old BSG as if it’s a completely different show all it’s own. Twice the BSG is nice.
