Addicted to the Internet?

by GeekMom on February 20, 2008

After I got my kids off to school this morning, I was sitting in my usual spot, at the computer. I started opening all my favorite sites in tabs, glanced out the window to watch the snow falling, checked to see whether the pages were loading fast enough… Fired up Mail and a couple of other applications, checked Firefox again, started reading headlines.

My husband came down the stairs and was putting on his coat to leave for the office. He said, “Did you see that news story on people who are addicted to the internet?

I said, “How could I have seen that if I was over here working on the computer?”

I’m hilarious, I know. :-) I admit it; I have an internet dependency.

How addicted are you? How long can you go without checking something online? Days? Hours? Minutes?

My husband and I are both addicted. I can go without for hours and he in minutes. Someday, they’ll have IAA (Internet Addicted Anonymous). I thought my eyes would get worse with all this computer work, but after a recent eye check, my optometrist actually said my eyes improved. Go figure!

I really noticed it this past Sunday…when we just so busy I did not get to even check my email. I was lusting for 5 minutes with the puter. Made me realize…I do have a dependency issue..not a problem really…it is a consentual relationship.

I have a BlackBerry, so I used to get all my emails sent to it instead of an inbox online. But I realised that although it was pretty cool to have them beeping through and me able to reply wherever I was, I really didn’t like that my emails went with my everywhere. So I set up a gmail account. And now I could go for days without logging on to the internet… IF I didn’t use it to earn all my money :)

@Lewis, I see you on my gmail contacts almost all the time. You seem to be always connected! No wonder you’re such a Squidoo moneymaker genius!

I have gone a few days…but not by choice. When you have to move somewhere, you don’t always have internet access. And visiting my MIL. She’s not “connected”…so we have to go to the library. If we’re there a week, we MIGHT get to the library once…maybe twice if we’re lucky.

But, usually, as soon as my hubby leaves, the computer’s fired up and I’m on most of the day.

Oh sister, tell me about it! We almost don’t turn our laptop off. And when we’re out and we don’t get a wi-fi hotspot, then there’s our handy mobile where we check our email every few minutes.

Believe it or not, when we’re in bed and trying to sleep, I even get a hold of my mobile to check my email even in the middle of the night when I get up to go to the washroom. I really have to watch it. :-)

I was dropping my card when I saw your post. Best regards to you and your family :-)

I’ll admit it, “My name is Cindy and I’m an internet addict…”
I’m really bad – I swear I suffer withdrawal symptoms if I have to be away from my computer for too long.
I see you have comment luv and you have your own domain- I can’t seem to get it to work.

I am online 8 hours a day while at work…and I go through severe withdrawal if I’m not able to check my email, facebook, blog…etc…at least once in the evening.

I’ve put myself on an internet diet – One hour and no more in the evening. I’ve never had to diet for any reason before, and I think that’s a good thing, because I CHEAT. A LOT.

@Everyone – I’m so glad I’m not alone! One night, Hubby was going to bed, and he reminded me, “You know, the Internet will still be there in the morning…” ha ha.

@Cindy – I’m not an expert, but I’d be happy to describe what I did if you like. Also, the CommentLuv author is very helpful, and supports his plugin very well. I wrote about it here.

Great site! It really is amazing. If we are really busy I can go without my internet for a few hours, but most days; well, lets just say if I didn’t have to get up to use the bathroom I may just be glued to my couch. At least when I didn’t have a laptop I moved to the desk…LOL.

I’m addicted! I may need a laptop to stay connected when I’m not at home or at the office. Fortunately, hubby is addicted too. His poison is World of Warcraft. :)

I am so addicted!! I am on all the time. If I am not on, I am thinking about what I could be if I was online. My computer is my first stop after I get the kids off to school and the last stop before I go to be at night. But i’m normal, right? :)

I have seriously thought about starting a group called internet addicts anonymous but some reason I don’t think an online support group for internet addicts would be such a good idea. I have such a bad problem that I have gotten a pinched nerve in my neck and neuropathy in my hand. I definitely think I have a problem but since my job requires me to be on the computer I can’t seem to stop.
