Here is a funny story I had to share. My kindergartener recently had trouble getting his fingers all the way into his gloves before going out to the bus stop. He insisted there was something in there! I said, “Just try again,” because sometimes that works… He tried jamming his fingers into the gloves, but they wouldn’t go all the way in.
So, being a good mother, I turned the problem glove inside-out to check for debris. I was expecting a scrap of Kleenex or a piece of grass. I got the first couple of fingers checked out. Nothing was there. Turning these gloves out is no easy task, because the fingers are pretty small.
I continued with the index finger, and started pushing the tip of the glove inward. As I worked the glove and opened up the finger, I saw long, brown fibers being pushed out. I thought it might be a piece of mulch. Then, a roundish wad of something emerged. And finally, the whole leggy, smushed, balled-up spider fell out of the glove and onto the floor.
Fortunately, it was dead. Our vigorous attempts at putting on the glove had done the trick.
It’s a good thing my 6-year old is not afraid of bugs, or this might have been a traumatic experience.
The moral of the story: Always shake your gloves out before putting them on!
WELCOME! I can't teach you how to monetize your blog, but I can offer you some mostly intelligent conversation, moderately geeky tech talk, very funny mom stories, with the occasional rant thrown in for sanity. I'm so glad you're here!

OH MY GOD, YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!! As I was reading this I kept thinking, no way could it be like a spider or something. Ugh, I’m scared to death of spiders… I’ll never, ever, ever, put on gloves or let my kids put on gloves without checking now. Thanks for the nightmare…

Shake your shoes, too! The same thing happened to me when I was a kid as I put on a pair of shoes I pulled out of the back of my closet. Since I was scared to death of spiders (and still am), it was traumatic. I still shake them if they’ve been in the closet for a while.

I agree with Natalie! I had the same experience, and as I myself am deathly afraid of spiders, it was completely traumatic for me! All I have to say is poor little guy! Hilarious story!

Yes, Natalie! I have another story about the time I took my shoes off after school, and there was a dead cricket stuck to the toe of my sock. Gross!

I am traumatised! :p
when I was small, I always check my shoes before putting them on. The 1 time I forgot to do it, there was a frog in my shoe! Lucky I was wearing a sock. But the experience haunt me until today. hahaha

I was going to say shake your shoes too. Growing up our shoes were kept in the basement since it is a walk-in basement and where it would get damp during the summer that’s where the spiders would like to crawl. And I’m not talking tiny spiders either. A few years back I was taking a bath, looked up on the ceiling and saw one the size of my fist. It wasn’t easy killing the thing either- I LOATHE spiders. Eeesh!

Oh Jeez! That would have KILLED my kid when she was little - she loved spiders! First time she came in contact with one, she thought it was a raisin and got mad that it wouldn’t stay still long enough to be eaten.
I wonder if your boy will grow up shaking his gloves until he’s old, and never remember how the habit started…? It’s good he’s not afraid of the creepy-crawlies, considering!

Les - that’s funny! I wonder how many bugs she ate when you weren’t looking… My son loves bugs. When grandparents are coming to visit, he asks them to bring grubs ( you know, the wormy white beetle larvae that people use for fishing bait?) for him to play with. He likes them because they’re “cute and soft.”

That would certainly have traumatized me! I always shake the shoes we keep out in the garage before I put them on in the summertime, but I never thought about gloves.

Well I’m a little more than freaked. I’m glad it “turned out” this way and that no one was bitten!

Also, shake your boots… Once when I was living in the country I left my boots on the porch overnight because they were too muddy to bring inside. In the morning to my horrified surprise, my foot discovered a mouse had found itself a brand new home!!
