I have three kids of my own, and although I love them all dearly, they do have their moments. My first baby had trouble sleeping. He had allergies and acid reflux, which we didn’t get diagnosed until he was 15 months old, because the pediatrician kept telling us he’d grow out of it. “Stop breastfeeding him and he’ll sleep through the night.” “Take away the pacifier, because he can’t find it, and then he can’t get back to sleep.” “Just let him cry.”
That first baby is almost nine, and I still shake with fury when I remember what that stupid doctor put us through. Thankfully, I finally (I know, I should have done it sooner, but I trusted the doctor…) took him to a specialist and got things taken care of. It was nice to finally get some sleep! But I digress…
The point of this post was not to recount my old grudges.
Actually, some of our friends are just now having babies. We’re having a mini baby boom in our little circle. And even though I really want everyone to be healthy and happy, and I hope their babies are sweet little bundles of joy, there’s a snarky little part of me that hopes those kids throw some big tantrums and wake their parents up at all hours of the night. Just to be fair.
So there you have it: GeekMom’s dark side. Be afraid. ![]()

I has heard that most babies’ll sleep through the night once the reaches a certain weight, like maybe 12 pounds. So I recommends ya start feeding’em lead weights from the get-go.

Hey, my son had colic, I’m surprised I’m still married and have all my hair after that, lol. And he’s just now sleeping through the night. The way you hear my mom tell it, all three of her kids slept through the night after coming home from the hospital!!

You took him to a specialist? What kind of specialist? My daughter cried a lot too when she was 6-9 months, but she did outgrow it without us taking her to a specialist.

We took him to a gastroenterologist who did all kinds of tests, and determined that he had acid reflux and likely food allergies. Then we took him to an allergist and found out he was allergic to all kinds of stuff. He’s one of those kids who is allergic to everything. We got him on Prilosec and modified his diet, and he started sleeping through the night around 18 months. Looking back, I don’t know how I survived on so little sleep for so long, but he was my first, and when the doctor told me he was normal/fine, I believed him.
A mean side? Hmm maybe a bitter side? I don’t know. My son is four and while he has his many health issues due to the immune deficiency, I feel his sleeping problems are more related to me spoiling him because he has been sick so much. I do not remember the last night where I didn’t wake up on his bedroom floor. =o/

Yes, bitter for sure! But I was feeling kind of mean about secretly hoping my friends’ kids would give them some trouble. No parenting experience is complete without sleepless nights and tantrums, right?
Wow, I commend you on getting through that. Reflux (GERD) and especially allergies require constant vigilance. It’s an ongoing battle, I feel your pain there.
Please feel free to stop by http://www.JoyfulDigesting.com and share your experiences with others – I’m trying to encourage more people to post their own questions and tips for each other!
Regardless – I wish you the best of luck. And I bet you REALLY appreciate your naps now!
